Red Velvet

I am and always have been a massive cake enthusiast (I have the chubby childhood pictures to prove it) and I will never forget when my good friend from University knocked on my door with a box of Hummingbird’s finest vanilla cheese frosted red velvet cupcakes. I had never tried them before and sort of hesitated when I saw their bright colour, but after just one bite they went down their history and earned their place next to the greats: carrot cake, victoria sponge, anything with meringue, lemon tart & cream, groom’s cake, yull log, mince pies, tiramisu, macaroons…OK, so the list is pretty endless….

Despite my mum telling me that hunger is my friend, in a similar way as exercise releases endorphins, eating cake and lots of it really does make me happy, or at last I think it does at the time… So finding a fashion trend which pretty much pays homage to cake in my books is just too good to miss!

Indeed for Fall/Winter 2014-2015 it seems as though Velvet is the word on everybody’s lips: from the cake to the runways of Oscar de la Renta, Tocca, Marques Almeida, Ninna Ricci and Donna Karen, its definitely having a winter comeback. Now I know velvet conjures up images of Hugh Heffner and Mrs Havisham’s faded dress that your mum tries to convince you to wear to your school prom so that she doesn’t have to spend some money buying a new one…, BUT, it is also a very glam material, which keeps you warm in the winter time and truly gives a regal edge to any blazer or dress.

Just before Christmas I walked into H &M and saw a beautiful Red Velvet Snapback cap. I thought it was so different and original, perfect for accessorizing a street style look or adding some colour to an all black ensemble. However today I decided to wear it to my industry meetings with my Dad’s oversize velvet  Dolce & Gabanna blazer. I guess wearing man’s clothes as a woman is a whole other topic, but do let me know what you think 🙂 If you could style a cupcake which one would you do and how? What’s your favorite flavor?*
